Mediation Northern Ireland was delighted to host a conversation with Bill Shaw of the 174 Trust on Monday, January 30th as part of the ongoing exploration of the Moral Imagination.  Bill recounted his journey into work with the 174 Trust.  He talked about the leaps of faith that were needed to just listen and respond to a community and its needs rather than to have a plan and force a community to accept it.  Bill described his openness to offer a room, a key, a coffee, a listening ear or whatever he had available at the time to anyone who turned up and said they had a project that they would like to develop.

By listening, responding and sharing the resources in this cooperative rather than competitive way the 174 Trust is now firmly located within the heart of the community.  Bill’s approach provides a good compass for all of us working alongside communities in transition.

On Monday, February 27th from 2-4pm Mediation Northern Ireland will host Cathal McLaughlin from the Prisons Memory Archive.

The Prisons Memory Archive holds 175 filmed interviews of people who were connected to the Maze and Long Kesh Prisons and Armagh Gaol during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

Participants, who were recorded onsite, include prison staff, prisoners, chaplains, probation officers, visitors and teachers. The PMA is currently in post-production designing software for an interactive digital archive that will allow access to multi-narratives of our contested past.

This is an open event and everyone is welcome to join the conversation.

The Art & Soul of Civic Leadership Conference
Democracy that delivers

This conference explored the possibilities for a democracy that delivers in Northern Ireland as a transitional society, drawing on John Paul Lederach’s work ‘The Moral Imagination’.  It created a space to discuss our vision, describe our reality and challenged each of us as civic leaders to imagine pathways between both, individually and collectively.
